Hair 101

Know what you're
actually buying.

The hair extension industry runs on confusing labels — raw, virgin, Remy, 100% human — that mean different things to different brands. Here's the full breakdown of what separates quality hair from the rest, why it matters, and how to spot the difference yourself.

Raw
Raw Human Hair
Single-donor, collected at source with minimal handling. No chemical treatments, cuticles fully intact and aligned. The rarest and highest-provenance category — holds pattern, responds to heat, and lasts with proper care.
Highest grade · longest lasting
Remy
Remy Human Hair
Cuticles run root-to-tip in the same direction, which prevents tangling. "Remy" is a cuticle standard only — not a processing standard. Remy hair can still be acid-bathed, bleached, or chemically treated. Quality varies widely.
Cuticle-aligned · processing varies
Virgin
Virgin Hair
Never chemically processed, colored, or permed. Virgin speaks to chemical history only — it doesn't mean single-donor or guarantee cuticle alignment. Often marketed as interchangeable with raw. They're not the same.
Unprocessed · not the same as raw
Non-Remy
Non-Remy Hair
Cuticles run in mixed directions, causing tangling over time. Often coated in silicone to disguise this on first touch — which washes out after a few shampoos, revealing the underlying quality.
Tangles over time · silicone mask
Key Rule
All raw hair is Remy and virgin by definition. Not all Remy is virgin. Not all virgin is Remy. A brand that uses these terms precisely — and can back them up — is worth trusting.
What We Do
Steam-Set Texturizing
CUTICLE INTACT
Heat and moisture shape the wave pattern without touching the cuticle layer. The hair's protective surface stays sealed — which is why steam-set hair holds moisture, maintains pattern retention, and lasts longer. The only method we use on Origin bundles.
✓ Cuticle-intact · pattern holds · longer lasting
What to Avoid
Acid Bath Processing
CUTICLE STRIPPED
Acid dissolves the cuticle to produce a uniform texture in bulk. Looks smooth in the store — but without the cuticle, the hair has lost its natural protection. It tangles faster, loses pattern after washing, and degrades quickly.
✗ Cuticle removed · pattern loss · faster degradation
Acceptable
Water-Soluble Silicone
HAIR STRANDWATER-SOLUBLE LAYER💧WASHES OUT CLEANLY
Rinses clean with regular shampoo. Protects hair during shipping and adds slip on first touch. After the first wash, you're working with the natural hair underneath. We use water-soluble silicone only — disclosed on every pack.
✓ Washes clean · no buildup · fully disclosed
Red Flag
Permanent Silicone Coating
HAIR STRANDPERMANENT COATING🔒BUILDS UP · MASKS DAMAGE
Cannot be washed out. Often applied to low-grade hair to feel premium on first touch. Builds up over time, traps residue, and blocks moisture from reaching the shaft. Hair that changes dramatically after 3–4 washes is almost always permanently coated.
✗ Builds up · masks damage · hides real grade
Myth
"The shinier the hair, the better the quality."
Shine is the easiest quality to fake. Silicone coating creates a glass-like sheen on hair that may be low-grade or heavily processed. Real high-quality hair has a natural luster — not a plastic gloss.
Fact
Shine can be silicone. Test it.
Wash the hair before installing. Hair that changes dramatically after the first shampoo was being masked from the start. The float test and burn test are the most reliable quality checks.
Myth
"100% human hair means it's unprocessed."
Human hair can be acid-bathed, silicone-coated, and bleached while still carrying the "100% human" label. That claim only tells you the fiber origin — not what was done to it after collection.
Fact
Ask about processing, not just origin.
Was an acid bath used? What type of silicone? Brands that can't answer these questions directly are usually hiding the answer. We disclose every processing step on every pack.
Myth
"Higher price always means higher quality."
Premium pricing often reflects brand markup and influencer spend — not material quality. The same grade of hair can sell for $80 in one channel and $450 in another.
Fact
Look for what the brand can verify.
Brands that control their supply chain and can speak specifically to sourcing and processing are worth paying for. Transparency is the actual quality signal — not price.
Signs of quality hair
  • Sinks in water within 15 minutes (float test)
  • Burns slowly with a charcoal ash smell — does not melt or bead
  • Curl pattern returns after washing and air-drying
  • Consistent texture from root to tip — no sudden smoothness mid-strand
  • Brand discloses processing method and silicone type in writing
Red flags to watch for
  • Floats in water or takes longer than 15 minutes to sink
  • Melts or smells like burning plastic (burn test failure)
  • Dramatically different texture after the first shampoo
  • Curl pattern doesn't return after washing
  • Brand can't specify processing method when asked directly

Supply Chain

From source to
your doorstep.

We built the supply chain ourselves — direct supplier relationships, specified processing at every step, and four-test quality control on every batch. No brokers. No black boxes.

01
India
Ethical Sourcing
We build direct relationships with verified raw hair suppliers — skipping brokers and intermediaries entirely. Every supplier relationship is assessed for ethical collection practices, supply consistency, and quality transparency before we commit.
What we verify at source
  • Cuticle alignment and structural integrity
  • Natural color and texture consistency
  • No prior chemical treatment or damage
  • Donor batch documentation and traceability
Our collection standard
  • Direct supplier relationships — no middlemen
  • Fair market pricing at collection level
  • Initial texture, color, and length grading
  • On-site rejection of mixed or damaged hair

China
Processing
Raw hair is processed by our vetted OEM partners — specialists with state-of-the-art equipment and multi-stage quality control. We specify every step and audit outputs before accepting any batch.
1
Washing & Alignment
Raw hair is gently washed to remove debris while preserving cuticle alignment. Misaligned strands are removed manually. pH-balanced conditioning follows.
2
Drawing & Sorting
Hair is drawn to remove short strands, then sorted by length and density. Double-drawn batches receive a second pass to ensure root-to-tip consistency.
3
Steam Texturizing
For Origin body wave: hair is set in steam chambers using heat and pressure — no chemical processing. Temperature and timing are controlled for batch-to-batch consistency.
4
Wefting
Hair is sewn into 100g wefted bundles with a secure, flexible weft. Weft width and stitch density are checked before moving forward.
5
Conditioning & Finish
Final conditioning with water-soluble silicone only. The type and stage of any coating is recorded and printed on every pack — no hidden treatments.
6
Quality Control
Every bundle is weighed, inspected for texture consistency and cuticle alignment, and tested against our four-point protocol before shipment is authorized.
03
Every Bundle
Our Testing Protocol
Before any bundle is approved for sale, it passes four tests. Every batch. No exceptions.
Burn Test
Real human hair burns slowly with a charcoal ash and a distinct protein smell. Synthetic blends melt and bead. We burn samples from every batch — a failed batch is rejected in full.
Float Test
Virgin hair sinks in water within 15 minutes. Heavy silicone coatings and synthetic fibers float. Any bundle that doesn't pass is pulled — not discounted or reclassified.
Pattern Retention Test
We wash and air-dry samples to verify wave and texture pattern returns to standard. For body wave, we require ≥80% pattern recovery after washing.
Silicone Strip Test
We test for residue after repeated washing. Water-soluble silicone is expected to clear. Permanent silicone that persists is a rejection — it signals underlying quality issues the coating was hiding.
